How does Directory Sync work in DX?

Directory Sync can be used to automatically populate user properties in DX. Directory Sync does not help with user provisioning or team hierarchy data. Both of these are handled separately in DX. If GitHub or GitLab usernames are set in DX but blank in your directory, DX will not overwrite your existing values with blank ones.
