# What is the difference between a team and a group?
Teams and Groups in DX serve different purposes: Teams provide a stable, admin-managed view of your organization, while Groups offer flexible, user-managed spaces for cross-functional collaboration. **Teams** reflect structure and **Groups** enable agility. More specifics detailed below:

### Management and Control

**Teams** are managed by admins through CSV imports or the UI while **Groups** are managed via the UI and can be edited by Workspace Admins or the Group Owner.

Example: Your company may upload your team structure from Workday a few times a year to update hierarchys and reporting structures prior to a snapshot, but a user may create an ad-hoc group at any time to reflect the combined data set they need at that moment.

### Purpose and Structure

**Teams** are typically broader, representing larger development teams or squads that follow the more strict company org chart. **Groups** are more dynamic and tailored to the needs of the group coordinator, allowing them to create focused teams based on specific activities or projects.

Example: a **Team** might reflect the full engineering organization, where a **Group** might represent members from different Teams, all supporting a similar initiative, like a product launch.

### Membership Rules

A Teams lead is not considered a contributor unless explicitly added. A **Group** owner is not automatically considered part of the group as a member.

Example: A team lead might not be added as a contributor if they don't contribute code to that pool of employees. A group owner may not be participating in the day-to-day efforts of a group initiative so they might not be a member. In both cases, the employee can join a team as a contributor or a group as a member if they are actively contributing to the work being tracked.

### Integration

**Groups** can be linked to DX Teams for easier management (choose "Link to DX team for auto-syncing" during the Group creation process), and there's now functionality to filter reports by **Groups** instead of only by Teams.

### Reports

On reports that we currently support embedding on the Group dashboard, users now have the option to filter results by Groups instead of only by Teams. We will continue incrementally to add to all DX reports.
